Christchurch - Switching Off; Is Showing You Care!

Christchurch was the first city in New Zealand to embrace the global concept of Earth Hour, by encouraging local businesses and residents to switch off lights and unused applicances for one hour on 29 March 2008. As a result we used 12.8% less power during that hour ... so just imagine what is possible as the campaign gains momentum and more-and-more people switch off to show they care!

Christchurch's dedication to climate change continues to grow and on 28 March 2009, poeple will join together to celebrate and create a conversation about the future of our planet.

Earth Hour is a message of hope and action - imagine what we can do if we all act together!

So switch off your lights and join us at one of the many Earth Hour related events throughout the city on Saturday 28 March 2009.

  • Join us in Cathedral Square for Earth Hour Unplugged - an acoustic music concert from 6pm - 10pm.
  • Enjoy a short movie festival at the Christchurch Cathedral from 6pm - 10pm.
  • Dine at one of the many restaurants hosting candle-lit dinners.
  • Relax at home, by candle-lit with family and friends.

And please make sure that the lights in your office are turned off when you leave on Friday afternoon!!

Capture a sense of fantasy with The Ragamuffin Children ...

The Ragamuffin Children create a sound that is unique and engaging. Their songs capture a sense of fantasy and an other-worldly charm that is unmatched in New Zealand music.

The band formed in 2007 by Anita Clark (vocals, guitar, violin) and Brooke Singer (piano) when they released their debut album 'Werecat Lullabies'. After touring several times around New Zealand, and a brief stint overseas, they decided the time was right to record their second album 'The Seahorse Emporium' with help from new satellite members Benjamin James (clarinet, accordion, synth) and Karena-Tui Miles-Hemopo (backing vocals).
'The Seahorse Emporium' is a collection of curio's, tales of seahorses, storms, snakes and struggles, and was recorded at Wellington studio 'The Surgery' with outstanding producer Lee Prebble with funding from Creative New Zealand.

Earth Hour Unplugged will kick start with the dynamic sounds of Dr Sanchez on latin guitar ...

Dr Sanchez has spent the last 10-years playing professionally as a Latin Guitarist in Europe and throughout Australasia. His improvised style; mixing traditional Mediterranean and South American songs with original tracks has earned Dr Sanchez the honour of playing at events such as the Gold Coast Indy and the Americas Cup. Plus his unique fusion has also been welcomed by the large hotel chains Hilton, Versace and Sheraton.

Earth Hour Unplugged will be one of around 250 performances Dr Sanchez will play this year; so don't miss the opportunity to listen to his rendition of the works of Paco de Lucia, Armik, Ottmar Liebert and Santana. While his original tracks lean more towards progressive beats fused with nylon string guitar ... all improvised and dynamic!
